Incredible Insect Designs – Adult Coloring Book Review
Who knew that insects could possibly be colorful and beautiful? Marty Noble has illustrated the creepy crawlies with such beautiful detail that she has converted me to loving insects! This lovely soft cover book is part of the Creative Haven series of books, published by Dover. Their books are always good value for money with lovely artwork. One of their illustrators is Marty Noble who has illustrated many of their books, including this one.
Creative Haven always have a soft cover book that measures approximately 27.5cm x 21 cm (or about 11 inches x 8.5 inches). Inside the front and back cover you will find a beautiful colored insect. These colored images are always a helpful inspiration to me as I find choosing colors fraught with difficulty.
At the start of the book, the title page has a lovely small drawing (not the same as the cover). This would be a good spot to test your wet mediums and see if there is any bleed through. Make sure you place a piece of card behind the paper.
The illustrations are printed on single sided white paper. The paper is thin but not as thin as some coloring book paper. The pages are perforated making it easy for you to remove them and copy them onto cardstock or remove them to work on them on your craft table or clip board. In total there are 31 illustrations for you to color (excluding the title page). The illustrations are so detailed with flower patterns, swirls and the like that you will forget what you are coloring! Marty has managed to make the insects intricate and adorable in her drawings. I swear some of them are smiling at me 🙂
The majority of the illustrations are framed with some type of border. It may be a fine line or leaves, but there is generally something that frames the image. The illustrations are well centred on the page, but the border close to the spine is narrower than the others due to the page perforation.
There is a variety of complexity in the images. Some images call for finer detail and good eyesight and motor skills will be important while others have larger areas of space and less detail. I would assess the book as having more detailed images than less.
