Mein Sommerspaziergang Coloring Book  Review

This is the final coloring book in the series of coloring books that German illustrator, Rita Berman has created based on the seasons – Winter, Fall, Spring and Summer.     I have previously reviewed the other coloring books in this series;   Mein Winterspaziergang,  Mein Herbstspaziergang and Mein Frühlingsspaziergang

Mein Sommerspaziergang translates in English to My Summer Walk which is the same title convention that all the previous coloring books have followed.    Of course,  it is hard to resist one book when they are created as part of a  series.   Try as I might to rein in my coloring budget, I could not possibly have an incomplete set of coloring books. I had to buy Mein Sommerspaziergang for that reason 🙂      As Australia eases into Winter,  I’m hoping that these coloring pictures depicting Summer will warm me up a little!

Cover & Layout

The cover and layout of  My Summer Walk is the same style as previous covers in this series.      A partially colored image from the book is featured on the cover.    The colors used depict a bright and cheerful image as you would associate with the summer months.    The spine and publisher’s logo has a sunny yellow background which reinforces the theme.         The back cover features a wrap around of the front cover imagery.  In the center decorating the publisher’s blurb is the same image we have seen on previous books in this series showing a coloring book and pencils.     Although I cannot read the German text,  I presume that this is reminding the colorist that colored pencils are best used on this book.      In this book for the first time,   we are actually seeing that image in a larger illustration within the book.

Ancillary Pages

The book commences with a plain page just showing publishers logo.   Over the page there is information about other coloring books and the artist.     An extended, mainly text title page follows with copyright information on reverse.   Any of these pages would be a great spot to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper and your coloring style.

A message from the artist follows that is decorated with a cute sailing boat for you to color.

At the rear of the book you will find pages depicting the cover art of each other book in this series.

icecream is a summertime favorite

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on both sides of the white, medium quality paper.    The paper is at the lighter end of medium and would be best used with coloring pencils.    If you are going to use other mediums remember to test them at the front of the book on the ancillary pages first. If you decide to use wet mediums, bear in mind that the paper is not designed for this purpose and may buckle, warp or pill and depending on how much water you add may damage the image on the reverse.

In this book there appears to be more double page spreads than in previous coloring books by Rita Berman.  There are 32 double page spreads in total.  However,  the pages do fold over easily making it easy to color in the gutter area of the book.  Some images have been cleverly positioned 1 or 2 mm from the spine to ensure that the line art does not merge into the spine.

Mein Sommerspaziergang Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

Rita Berman has a way of creating art work that is sweet and whimsical without being too sugary.    There is an innocence about the cutesy houses and adorable animals that makes you feel young again just looking at them.    I think one of the nicest things about Rita’s books is what a You Tube viewer said,  “they are not overwhelming”.     Often we can buy coloring books that are so beautiful and so packed with detail, that they can often lead to overwhelm and a paralysis by analysis where you are too wary of making a start on the book.   Maybe, it’s just me,  but I don’t feel overwhelmed with Rita’s art work.  In fact, even on my coloring training wheels,   I feel that I can just color a picture and it will be relaxing and enjoyable.     After all, that’s what coloring should be about 🙂

In this Summer themed coloring book Rita Berman has created all of the images that we may associate with a quirky European Summer.      You will find beautiful birds,  cute houses, summer beach gear, houses covered in flowers,  beautiful garden settings, camping scenes and a lot of imagery associated with water.   You might see ducks playing, sail boats, fish, lighthouses and shells.

There is a wide variety of images within the book with a lot of cute critters to color,  pretty flowers and quirky buildings.

You will also find some pages that are pattern based.    Normally,  I am not a fan of  wallpaper style pages but the few that are included look like they could be f un to color in and do not detract from the main theme of the book.  If you were not a fan of these pages, it means that you could color the image on the reverse in markers or wet mediums and not worry about damaging the art work for future use.

Colorists that have a minor visual impairment will find that the crisp, black lines are easy to see to color in.     There is a mix of  imagery in the book with some pages being more packed with detail than others.    Most colorists with a minor visual impairment would probably benefit from a magnifying lamp coloring the book (as the image size is smaller due to the size of the book) and there are not a lot of elements that have large unadorned open spaces for ease of coloring.

About the author

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

  • I remember when coloring books were all thick clumsy lines with no surprises. Todays coloring books are works of art. Not your moms coloring books indeed. Really enjoy your blog. Great job.

    • Thank you Pam! Some of my coloring books I consider to be true art books and are just for looking. We are so blessed to have all of this wonderful art at a relatively small cost to enjoy. Happy coloring x
