Rilakkuma Coloring Book  Review

Inko Kotoriyama is an amazing talent.  She has produced numerous colouring books ranging from the gorgeous Happy Birthday, multiple Disney colouring books. In 2017 working with San X to reproduce much loved characters into colouring books.  In 2018 and 2018 you will see more of this cute bear as merchandise and a Netflix are scheduled for release.

Rilakkuma is the little brown bear on the cover of this book.   The name roughly translates to “relax bear”

Cover & Layout

Rilakkuma is a bit smaller of a coloring book than we are used to.  It measures 22.5cm x 22.5cm.  The laminate dust jacket has a picture of Rilakkuma on the front and his friend the little white bear,  Korilakkuma.

The cover art has been repeated on the card cover of the coloring book.  As it is a gloss laminate it may be difficult to penetrate to color if you wanted to.

Two pink protective pages keep the pages clean at either end of the book.

Ancillary Pages

At the front of the book there are several “painting lessons” in color.   As these are written in Japanese, they are difficult for me to follow but I presume that Inko is explaining how to color the bears with a fuzzy detail and other elements.   There are suggested mediums pictured as well.   This is something that I would need to study in detail to figure out the steps involved in my own mind.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on both sides of the off white, faint textured, medium, sturdy paper.

There are double page scenes in the book but for the most part a lot of attention has been paid to the positioning of the line art.

Art Work

This is a fun book suitable for colorists of all ages and skills and particularly fans of  Rilakkuma.     These simple, outlined designs can provide hours of relaxation for colorists that like to solid color.  Coloring glass, sweet and fuzzy fur are some of the things that colorists that know techniques could enjoy.

The illustrations are very cute but simple.   This is great if you prefer large open space elements or have a motor skill impairment.

Line art is black and thick for the most part making it easy to see for those with a minor visual impairment.    On the whole black is used but there are lines that are in shades of gray.

Bonus

At the end of the book you will find 3 pages of postcards featuring characters from this new  coloring book.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
