Bon Voyage Coloring Book Review

Lizzie Mary Cullen has released a new book which is solely focused on France.   In future, it appears that she will be releasing these colouring journeys for other countries as well.   The book is interspersed with French proverbs and, fortunately, the translation for these is in English at the back of the book.  Like all her books, it is interactive and there are things to find along the way which relate to the proverbs in the book.

Cover & Layout

The cover is white gloss with pre printed shades of teal and the French flag.   The title and elements of the Eiffel tower are in glossy teal for extra shine.   You could color the remaining line work on the cover if you wished.

The book measures 25cm x 25cm (approximately 9.7 in x 9.7 in).

A plain text title page introduces the book followed by a nameplate with an elaborate border to color.  A curvy image of a Patisserie prefaces the introduction to the interactive component of the book.

The images are printed on both sides of the paper.   Each page has been numbered in the corner.  This makes it easier to check the translation at the rear of the book, and check the hidden elements within the book on the thumbnail key at the back of the book.

The paper is a cool white and medium quality.

Illustrations

The book features French architecture and historical buildings but they have been re-imagined in the artist’s trademark curvy style.    To be honest, I had some difficulty recognizing well known landmarks due to the artistic style.

As well as buildings there are also proverbs within wreath type shapes, trees, emblems and doodle type designs.   The art work in this book, although consistent with art work in her other coloring books,  appears to be very different.   Part of  this difference could be that we are used to seeing this artist use the whole of the page in her illustrations and double page scenes.   Colorists constantly want single page illustrations and it appears this artist has listened.    I have to say, I’m finding her artwork arranged in this way rather disconcerting.

The book comprises proverbs on the whole rather than the story format that we are used to with this artist.      Whilst there are 8 double page scenes the majority of the book is made up of single page scenes featuring either buildings or a proverb arranged in an emblem, regional map outline or mandala type imagery.

The line work is a dullish black and on the whole crisp and easy to see.   The line weight varies between a fine and medium weight.

All of the single page images have been nicely centered on the page making it easy to color all parts of the page.

Bon Voyage contains a number of images that have a lot of small detail on them.  Some colorists may have difficulty with these small spaces due to visual or motor impairment.

I really feel that this book could have been more “French” with a story of travelling around France, similar to the Magical Journey but country specific.     Of course, that is just my opinion, and I am sure I will adjust to this style in time.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
