Mermaids Coloring Book  Review

If I ever have the spare money for some original art, the first piece that I would buy would be one by Jasmine Becket-Griffith.  Of course, if it was solely my decision I would be leaning towards the Alice in Wonderland inspired paintings.    Mr Muscles however, is a huge Jasmine fan though (I had to pry the Halloween book out of his hand) so I’m guessing that he would opt for one of Jasmine’s darker paintings.  Hopefully, one day we will have the opportunity to fight it out for which painting to buy.

In the meantime though, if you cannot squeeze the budget for an original painting by Jasmine you can purchase prints at a low cost or support her through Patreon for exclusive behind the scenes, opportunity to win an original painting and exclusive coloring pages.

One of the things that I love about adult coloring though is that we can all experience the beauty of Jasmine’s art in coloring book format.    Low cost, beautiful and we can either drool on the pictures or color them and make them our own.

Cover & Layout

Mermaids is the third coloring book by Jasmine Becket-Griffith based on her original acrylic paintings and transformed to line art.    The book follows the same format and sizing as her previous coloring books.   A textured dust jacket protects the coloring book.   A deep navy background forms the backdrop for a beautiful and pouty mermaid.

On the back cover t here are 6 partial colored images from the book to inspire you.     You can also research Jasmine’s original paintings that the mermaid line art is based on if you need inspiration.

Mermaids Coloring Book measures approximately 27.5 cm x 21.5cm  (roughly A4 sized).

Ancillary Pages

A plain text title page starts the book with copyright information on the reverse.   At the end of the book there is a page with ads for Jasmine’s other coloring books and contact information on reverse.  Any of  these pages would be the  place to test out  your mediums.

An introduction from Jasmine starts the book setting out her inspiration and encouraging you coloring her line art.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on one side of the off white medium quality paper.   According to the publisher’s details, the paper is 150gsm.    If you wished to use wet media you could do so in this book but as always test it first on an ancillary page and pop a blotter between pages to avoid damage.    Everyone has a different coloring technique and some people may wet the paper more so than others so testing is always important.

A mix of portrait and landscape orientation illustrations are featured in the book.

Each illustration has been framed in a border ensuring that the art work is away from the spine.

All drawings are well centered and positioned on the page.     The facing page for each image details the name of the painting the line art was based on and a commentary from the artist about it.   This can really give you insight into the artist’s mind.   The name of the picture is very useful as well if you wish to research the original painting to get inspiration.

Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

As you wold expect from the title this coloring book is based on Mermaids!   Although the book follows the same format as Jasmine’s previous coloring books there are some slight differences.    First of all,  I haven’t counted, but it seems that there are more landscape/horizontal orientated images in this book than previously.

The other thing that I noticed is that there is a different in the line art.   Many of the illustrations use a light grey and a finer or sometimes sketchy line for elements on the page.     This could be so that when you are coloring these parts that they merge with the picture and create a “painterly” effect.    The balance of the line art is black, crisp and very easy to see.

Illustrations have also been included in this book that have large open elements on them.    This is particularly useful for colorists with a minor visual impairment or with motor skill challenge.   However, some of these illustrations have open elements on areas that you would normally expect to be detailed, for example; mermaid scales.   For colorists that like to create their own effects this will be a creative challenge.   For colorists that prefer the art work all to be outlined you can create a painterly look, without the individuality of the scales, similar to the front cover art.

A real mix of art work has been included in this book with different levels of complexity.    As there are 55 illustrations in the book no matter what skill level you are currently at, you should be able to find many illustrations to color.

In addition to the beautiful big eyed, long lashed mermaids you will also find other beautiful water themed elements to color including shells, fish and alligators.    Some of my favorite pictures in the coloring book feature non water elements like the beautiful mermaid among butterflies

As in her previous books there are smaller images included at the rear of the book.   In previous books, there were more smaller images set out 4 to a page.   In the Mermaids coloring book there are 5 smaller images, like chunky bookmarks.     These illustrations seem far more practical than trying to color the smaller detailed note card sized images to me.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
