Once Upon A Time Coloring Book  Review

I have wanted this book for so long it is unbelievable.    When I seen it about 18 months ago,   I felt that there was no rush to buy it and as I had bought so many others, my budget told me to get it later.   Of course,  later I it wasn’t as readily available.    Finally several months ago, I hunkered down to make a solid effort to get this book in my hot little hands.   I ultimately asked a bookshop in Australia to source the book for me.   They estimated it would take 2 weeks.   Ultimately that became 4 months as their supplier had difficulty sourcing this little cutie.    Often, when I hunt a coloring book down that proves somewhat elusive to me,  it can be a disappointment when I finally get to hold it.   Not so, in this case.

Cover & Layout

The first thing that struck me about this book when I finally received it was that it was a lot smaller than I expected.     Naturally,  I hadn’t bothered to look at the measurements of the book that was the object of my affections when I was hunting it down.    It came as a surprise that it was handbag sized rather than a full sized coloring book.      The small sizing though  suits this book. It is nice to now have  a fairy tale based book that is compact and great for commuting and travel.

The cover is white with gorgeous lien art on the laminated card.    There are green foil highlights on various elements including the title that gives it a real charm.

Once Upon a Time Coloring Book measures 19cm x 19cm.

Ancillary Pages

The cover art has been reproduced as a title page for you to color in.   Copyright information is on the reverse making this an ideal spot to test out your mediums.

A nameplate page has been included which over leaf features a lovely frame of artwork with text.

At the rear of the book there are 5 pages which you could also use to test your mediums.   These feature information about the artist, other products and the publishers.

Layout

Illustrations are fairy tale themed and are printed on both sides of the thick, white good quality paper.  the paper is at the higher end of medium and has a light texture to it.

All of the illustrations have been orientated portrait style in the book.    There is only one double page scene in the book.   Some of the illustrations, do have art work that abuts the spine of the book.   At the moment the spine is a little stiff but I am confident that it will push down with further use for ease of coloring.

Once Upon A Time Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The art work is inspired by fairy tales around the world.   I have to confess though,   I do not recognise what fairy tale all of the illustrations relate to 🙂  There are some that seem clearly identifiable – Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Three Little  Pigs, Cinderella,  The Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Swan Lake  and Pinocchio and others that I am not completely sure of.

The artist has taken a different approach with the illustrations where you may just see Cinderella’s pumpkin coach rather than the maid herself.

Each illustration is beautifully detailed and often features other elements like flowers and bushes to complete the image.

There are some illustrations that would have you running for the magnifying lamp and fineliners.   While others have a focal point of  a fairy tale character and are far easier to color in.

Colorists with a minor visual impairment may find that due to the amount of art work on the smaller sized page, that this book may not be for them.

The line art is black and crisp and ranges from a medium to fine weight.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
