Faber Castell Polychromos Colored Pencils – Features
- Faber Castell Polychromos are artist pencils that are available in a number of set sizes – 12 | 24 | 36 | 60 | 72 and 120. The pencils are packaged in a quality tin and the 120 set has the option of a wooden box instead
- Very well packaged on plastic trays with foam inserts, string lift up tabs, and sturdy tin
- Polychromos pencils are oil-based and known for their “extremely break-resistant leads, maximum light-fastness and … vivid colours“
- Well known and established art supply company
- luxurious pencils with a full colored barrel and end cap. The barrel color is similar to the pigment
- the company states that the Polychromos are smudge-proof and waterproof and can be used on wood, stone, leather, and metal as well as paper
- Faber Castell has a color art system where other products in the range have the same matching names and numbers. For example, the same colors that are in the Polychromos are also availabe in the watercolor Albrecht Durer pencils
- Pencils are available open stock
- As there is an end cap it is impossible to see if the core is centered but I have never experienced breakages with my sets
You can see my color swatches of the Faber Castell Polychromos 120 pencil set here
In approximately 2000, Faber Castell expanded its 100 sets of Polychromos pencils to 120 by adding 23 new polychromos pencils to the set and retiring 3 pencil colors. The pencil colors that were retired were light blue, light violet, and soft black. After scouring the world, I was able to locate the light blue and light violet pencils which I have also swatched. You can see the light blue and light violet polychromos pencils on the swatch above (bottom right).
I used the Faber Castell polychromos 120 blank colour chart – available to download here.
