Trolls – It’s Color Time Coloring Book Review
It seems like a long time ago that Trolls were the huge fad. Everywhere you went were these quirky little dolls with amazing brightly colored hair. There were troll stuffed toys, keyrings, car accessories, you name it – we were troll mad!

If you are not familiar with trolls there’s a nice little summary of their history on Wikipedia here . I’ve been there and done that for this craze before. I used to have a few troll dolls on my desk. Amazing to think now how much time you could spend pulling and teasing their hair!
“A Troll Doll is a type of plastic doll with furry up-combed hair depicting a troll, also known as a Dam doll after their creator Danish woodcutter Thomas Dam. The toys are also known as good luck trolls, or alternatively gonk trolls in the United Kingdom.
The dolls were originally created in 1959, and became one of the United States’ biggest toy fads in the early 1960s. They became fads again in brief periods from the 1970s through the 1990s and were copied by several manufacturers under different names. During the 1990s, several video games and a video show were created based on troll dolls. In 2003, the Dam company restored their United States copyrights, stopping unlicensed production. In 2005, the brand was modernized under the name Trollz, but it failed in the marketplace.”
When I seen the Official Trolls Coloring Book I suspected that there was more than nostalgia to the release of the book. I wasn’t at all surprised to see that DreamWorks are releasing a Troll movie in 2016.

Cover & Layout
The cover of the Trolls Coloring Book consists of a variety of trolls based on the new Troll movie. You can instantly see that this is a fun book from the cue font that has been used and the color selection. This coloring book is all about having a good time and just enjoying making a rainbow of colors. There are some areas that are partially colored in orange and aqua, and flowers and other highlights are in hot pink foil. The remainder of the line art on the cover can be colored . The spine of the book is pink with the title in white text.
On the back cover of the Trolls coloring book there is an abundance of trolls with some partially colored images in pink, orange and aqua. The balance of the back cover could be colored by the keen colorist.
The inner cover both front and back features line art of flowers with cute fish in between. It seems odd that there is not a troll in sight on the inner and back cover.
The book measures approximately 25cm x 25cm (approximately 10 in x 10 in).
A cute title page follows with a cute troll (which I think is Poppy – but my troll knowledge is lacking) with some cute little flowers. The hair, of course, is glorious and abundant as is the theme of a troll doll. You could imagine coloring the hair on these dolls in a multitude of colors or making rainbow hair.
On the reverse of the title page a beautifully decorated copyright page follows and then a nameplate page with just a a few floral elements on it to color.
The illustrations are all orientated portrait style and have been printed on both sides of the paper. The paper is excellent. It is a medium to heavy weight paper which is very sturdy to the touch. Unfortunately, the wonderful paper has been let down by the poor binding. Just from my minimal flip through of the book for this review, a number of pages have already come loose or come away from the binding completely 🙁 I could have been unlucky and got a defective book in the printing batch, but I notice that another reviewer has reported the same issue as well. Update: Several pages came loose from the binding and I requested and received a replaced copy of Trolls Coloring Book.
Illustrations
The illustrations are cute and quirky with tons of troll images but additional elements have been added as well to give it more variety. There are some lovely flowers and baubles to color, combs, cupcakes and hair accessories (what every trendy troll needs), some cute hearts filled with flowers and a nice little text quote to color.
The drawings are simple illustrations with lots of large open spaces. The wide open spaced art makes it very suitable for younger colorists and colorists that dislike fiddly coloring books or have health and visual issues coloring small, detailed spaces.
Skilled colorists can use the wide open spaces of the art work to create stunningly blended pieces of art work that might look like it’s taken from a movie poster. Other colorists will have a great time coloring just in solid colors and creating cute colored pages.
There is a nice variety of images in the book. The bulk of the images consist of two page scenes but there are a number of single page illustrations and some pages of patterns with smaller details.
The line art has been created in black ink and is mostly a fine weight. Although the lines are delicate I have had no issue seeing the line art, without my glasses, due to the large open spaces that comprise most of the imagery.
Many of the images will run to the spine of the book where traditionally it is difficult to color. However, due to the binding on my book, this will not be an issue.
There are a handful of images which would benefit from a lovely background and skilled colorists will probably enjoy adding quirky background effects to these pages.
