Vymalovánky II Cesta životem Coloring Book Review

This is the second volume of Vymalovanky by Lucie Ernestova. If you have not already seen the first coloring book by this Czech artist, you can check it out here.

According to Google Translate the title means “Cartoon II The Way of Life” which I suspect is incorrect 🙂 The illustrations in the book do have a way of life feel to them however … it is just the “cartoon” part I object to.

Obří vymalovánka. Jak se vam líbí? Připravena pro týmovou práci návštěvníků narodní abilympiády. Už zítra v Pardubicích!

If you are as smitten by this artist’s work as I am, make sure you check out her shop as it is filled will manner of swag that features her colored art work on it

Cover & Layout

The cover of this book features a partially colored image of a girl with painting palette in hand walking along a path. From the illustration you can immediately see the style of art is whimsical with wonky buildings and patterned surrounds.

You may also notice on the cover the deep grey shadowing on the uncolored line art. The cover picture also accurately describes how the illustrations are presented within the book. The art is framed inside a border and not taking the whole of the page.

It is not often that a coloring book presents us with options but both coloring books produced by Lucie Ernestova do. You can purchase these in either glue bound or spiral bound.

Usually, I do not like spiral binding (as it tears at the covers of my other books on a shelf) but for some reason I felt drawn to the spiral bound version of this book. At the time of writing, both book formats are the same price.

On the inside cover there are 16 colored inspirational image thumbnails from the book.

The back cover features thick, sturdy card which serves to stabilise the book if you are coloring on your lap and protects the book during the shipping process.

Vymalovánky – is A4 sized.

Ancillary Pages

Other than the page of inspirational colored images there are no ancillary pages. You can, of course, test out your mediums discreetly at the foot of each illustration in the area where the text has been printed.

Layout

There are 16 illustrations within the book and they have been printed on one side only of the beautiful watercolor paper. According to the seller’s site, the paper is 250 gsm.

Each illustration has a border surround, which has a three dimension effect with the use of shadows.

At the foot of each drawing there is text in Czech. According to Morena, who has this book and knowledge of the language, the text contains “uplifting messages and teachings”.

Vymalovánky II Cesta životem Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The illustrations in this second volume seem to have a theme that is more love and nature focused than the first volume of the coloring book while still containing many sweet and whimsical drawings.

You will find tiny fairies with enormous butterfly wings in comparison, wise gnarly trees, a tropical paradise and water based images.

Sweet little lovers hold balloons for you to color. A cheeky imp looks like he will create an explosion from his mass of letters formed into a wonky heart balloon, a skeletal fairy appears trapped in a beautiful bird cage while another fairy flies in the rain with her umbrella. Quirky but gorgeous.

In the second volume there appears to be more darker grey shading than the first coloring book. Background detail also contains grey shadowing giving depth to the ground and sky surrounding images.

As in the first book, there is a real air of hand drawn about these images with depth and texture added in with soft and delicate shading.

For colorists with a minor visual impairment, there are many small details in these books to color. The images are smaller sized due to the way they have been presented in the book and the lines are darker gray and dull black. All of these factors may make coloring the pictures challenging but, if you are like me, you will grab the watercolors and not worry about going outside the lines.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

  • Oh, cute book!! I am thinking, though, that I’d rather have it really well packaged like that; rather than how book depository sometimes does with only a thin paper envelope–those books often get totally ruined in shipping. I’d probably have to get someone else to open it though. Lol. I’m not sure my arthritic and painful hands could manage all that.

    • It was packed super tight ..the problem is trying to get through all that tape with a knife may lead to a sad accident 🙂 I actually tore a book from book depository like that, over excited with the packaging and ended up ripping the dust jacket 🙁 Best to get someone else to unwrap if you are in pain and save yourself for the coloring and fun part of looking at the pictures. • Pretty- very pretty. Almost too nice to colour – ALMOST. The artist has a real eye for nature. I adore trees and the ones featured have me in a spin. I shall look out for this book…….it may just come this way.
