Spellbinding Images  Coloring Book – A Fantasy Coloring Book

Spellbinding Images is a popular series of coloring books by fantasy artist, Nikki Burnette.  She has created books in both line art and greyscale to suit all colorists tastes.

Volume 2 of the Spellbinding Images series depicts a lovely green fairy on the soft cover.   On the back cover are thumbnails of the 20 illustrations that are inside the book.    The book is A4 size and measures approximately 28cm x 21.5cm.

Inside  you fill find 20 lovely illustrations.   The book starts with a plain title page, followed by copyright page and then the drawings.    Both of these pages could have benefited from some sample imagery to liven them up.     They are a good spot to test your markers and mediums and see if there is any bleed through or shadowing.

The illustrations that fill the book are printed on plain white paper.   The paper is thin and of the type used by most independent coloring book artists.    Each illustration has been nicely framed with a black, thin border.

Spellbinding Images – Volume 2 has  linework that is is black and crisp.   The majority of the line weight is medium and easy to read but there are some lines with a thinner line weight that may prove difficult for those with visual impairment.

The illustrations are gorgeous and range from simple images without a lot of embellishment or detail to more detailed images.     I always find that the simple images give skilled colorists an opportunity to really show off their blending and shading techniques.   I often prefer the simpler images as I dislike fiddly bits and often enjoy doing blocks of color.

Most of the girls throughout the book feature beautiful eyelashes and eyes.     There are many illustrations that have a large amount of space in the background which would be perfect for pan pastels or even a light water wash.

Whilst I am a fan of simple designs, I feel that some of the images in the book could have had more detail added, particularly on the hair of the fantasy creatures and feathers of the raven.   There is one image in the book that features a mermaid.   Although the image is very artsy and attractive to me it looks incomplete.     Overall, it is a beautiful book with just a few minor negatives for me.
