Mermaids, Fairies & Other Girls of Whimsy Coloring Book Review
This beautiful book by Hannah Lynn comes with a soft cover with a vibrant glossy design. Although there is some black and white line art that the colorist could color, the glossy paper cover may not be suitable for all mediums. Quite frankly, there’s plenty to color on the inside. The book measures approximately 8.5 inches x 11 inches.
Inside the book you will find thumbnails of the illustrations that are contained in the book. All of her “girls” are given names. This makes it easy to refer to your artwork online and if you are seeking out completed pages as inspiration. The designs consist of mermaids and fairies but there are also some creative takes on your favorite storybook characters with Snow White and Alice in Wonderland making appearances.
The 50 illustrations are all printed on the centre of the book, with a border around. This useful border “frames” the image and also allows plenty of room to cut the image out of the book without damaging the drawing.
Hannah draws beautiful faces and hair on her “girls”. They all sport eyelashes that make you wish for eyelash extensions and flowing, beautiful locks. The way that Hannah illustrates hair is really special. The clearly defined line work on the hair allows a lot of opportunities for a colorist to create rainbow hair, streaks and tips on the “girls”.
The paper used in the book is the same type of paper that most independent coloring book authors use. It is thin. You have to put a piece of card between the pages in order to avoid bleed or dents from pencils and markers. The artist has included a few blank pages at the back of the book for this purpose. Paper quality and weight is generally beyond the control of an artist and is set by the publishing company.
The artist has also added some variation of complexity in the images. There are some illustrations with a lot of fine detail and others that have a bit more large spaces for beginner colorists or those, like me, that do not like too many fiddly bits!

The line work is very strong and bold. If you have issues with your eyesight you will appreciate how easy the lines are to see.
