The Art Style
Johanna Basford’s work is famously floral with fine, dull black lines on creamy paper. The illustrations are printed on both sides of the paper with a two page color palette test page at the back of the book.
Johanna has included a range of illustrations to suit your moods. There are florals, outer space, sweet treats, robots, cute houses and some animals.
You will find many pages filled with small vignettes ranging from 2 images to 16. There are also some pages featuring random elements to color when you want a really, really quick coloring fix. There is enough room to add your own background if you wish as well.
The cover features illustrations from the book’s bulk of the illustrations on a mauve background interspersed with gold foil highlights. You can color the cover if you wish.
The book has a stitched and glued binding. Johanna suggests in the tips at the front of the book not to force the book to lie flat, but leave breathing space between the spine and your coloring work.
Paper Quality & The “Marker Test”
The paper is off-white and smooth. I tested with a variety of mediums, and most layered and blended well without any wax bloom.
