Dreams of Dragons & Dragon Kin Coloring Book Video Review

I hope you enjoyed the video walk through of  Dreams of  Dragons the first coloring book by Australian illustrator, Ravynne Phelan.

Dreams of Dragons & Dragon Kin Coloring Book Review

Nowadays,  I buy most of  my coloring books online.    It is rare that I will  find a book in store that I don’t have and that I want, but that’s what happened this time.     When I was out shopping for my shiny new computer the other week, I visited the bookstore next to the computer shop (more my type of shopping!).    On the shelf I spied this beautiful book called Dreams of Dragons.    Hubby was waiting, so I was being pushed to move it along . I left the beautiful dragons sitting on the shelf.    Then I thought about that book.  All weekend.   All day Monday.   All day Tuesday thoughts of  Dreams of  Dragons would enter my head.     On Wednesday I relented  and caught the bus into the city to where I had spied the book.    Luckily, it was the last one on  the shelf.     I paid a few dollars more than I would have if I had bought it online, but I couldn’t wait ….I had been having dreams of dragons of my own for days, so it was time to put my mind to rest!

Dreams of Dragons Coloring Book

Cover & Layout

The cover is always what attracts me first to any book whether online or in store.    This cover was no different, a black textured dust jacket  with a beautiful semi colored picture on the center of the cover.     There was something about this book that screamed quality before you even opened the page, and something familiar about it as well.  The spine of the book has simple text in grey and orange.    On the back of the book are six partially colored thumbnails of images from within the book.

The fold out flaps of the dust jacket contain general information about the artist and the book.

The actual book cover is plain brown card.

By this time I had realized what was so familiar about the book.     The publisher of this book is the same as that used by Jasmine Becket-Griffith.     Those familiar with Jasmine’s books will instantly recognize the well thought out layout and beautiful paper in these books.    The publishers have used the same winning formula with Dreams of Dragons and Dragon Kin which results in a high end, professional fantasy artist coloring book.

The book measures 27.5 x 21.5 cm (approximately 9.8 in x 8.5 in)  – roughly A4 sized.

Ancillary Pages

A plain text title page starts the book with copyright information on reverse.  This would be a great spot to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper and your coloring style. A two page introduction by the artist follows.

Layout

The illustrations have all been printed on slightly off white paper which is a medium quality.     All of the drawings have been orientated portrait style and are presented on a single page.   On the facing page, information about the original artwork is shown.

Illustrations

Crisp, black ink using a medium and fine weight has been used throughout the book.    The illustrations are visually very easy to see for colorists with visual impairment.   Although the drawings have a lot of detail to them, there are also large areas of open space making it easy to color for colorists with health challenges like arthritis.

Each illustration is framed with a fine border.     Thought has gone into the placement of the illustrations ensuring they are well centered and positioned on the page.      Due to the border around each image there is no loss of art work in the spine of the book.

As the title suggests this coloring book features dragons!   There are dragons in abundance!    In addition to dragons there are also strong, beautiful women, gorgeous greenery and other animals.

The artist tends to use the whole of the page to depict the scene but there are a few images that would benefit from the colorist adding a background color or background effects to suit the fantasy theme.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
