Desert Wonderland –Â Coloring Book
Desert Wonderland is the second coloring book by Rachel Reinert.  her first coloring book, Botanical Wonderland, was an outstanding success.  In this coloring book, Rachel is taking us on a journey in the desert, inspired by her travels overseas including Australia.
Cover & Layout
The cover of Desert Wonderland features a colored image from within the book.   A horned skull with desert flowers surrounding it and colored in the colors of a sunset in Perth, Australia.  With this colored image, Rachel immediately challenges the way that you see imagery in what is usually a vast, dry and deserted space. Often we associate the desert, particularly, in Australia as just dry red earth, without noticing the beauty that is contained in individual elements.   The other ting that I love about the cover art is that reflects Rachel’s work as a mixed media artist.   the cover art looks like it was washed with water colors and mixed media of foiling added.  Again, this gives me inspiration on how to color this book other than with my usual pencils.
Copper highlights on the title and elements of the main cover art add to the charm of this book and tend to elevate it to an art book due to the way that they have been position on the image.
On the back of the book, line art of cacti is available to color.
The cover is matte and the only thing that does concern me is that it may get dirty with my constant pawing on it.
The book measures 22cm x 27cm (approximately 8.8 in x 10.8 in)
Ancillary Pages
The title page features a beautiful illustration to color underneath the copper colored title text.  On the reverse you will find an image from within the book in a mock up display.   If you wished you could remove the image and frame it. On the facing page is an Introduction together with colored photographs from Rachel’s travels.  On the reverse you will find information about Rachel.
At the end of the book is a beautiful colored image from the book.  You could use this for inspiration with your own projects or remove it, frame it and give it to someone. It is gorgeous 🙂
Layout
White medium weight paper has been used throughout the book.  The illustrations are printed on one side of the paper, which is perforated for easy removal and to frame.
All of the images have been orientated portrait style.

Rachel has a beautiful, delicate style of drawing that looks stunning when just an outline and even more beautiful when colored.    Her drawings use crisp, black to outline the work but the line weight is varied throughout all the images.   This gives her work a realistic and dimensional look.
Some of her elements in images have a finer, delicate line to indicate the frailty of the plant whilst other images have stronger liens and selective solid black that give a sense of robustness and dimension.  In some areas the use of solid black really defines and shapes the element.
The illustrations in the book reflect a desert landscape in microform. usually, we see desert scenes as landscapes that are vast and bare of much plant life.  In Rachel’s drawings, we see the individuality of plants and animals found in the desert.  You will find lovely flowers, cacti, animal skulls portraits of beautiful girls adorned with some sort of plant life or morphed with an owl, birds and even plants filled with cacti.
The illustrations are all centered well on the page, away from the perforation guide, and are well balanced and position on the page.
There are no backgrounds with these illustrations.   The bulk of the drawings have enough white space to add some background effects and you can imagine beautiful colorful sunsets on some of them quite easily.   Other images you could see would look stunning if some chalk or pastels were dabbed in the background, similar to the cover photo.
There is a nice range of complexity in the images throughout. Some have finer details and more tightly packed in the image whereas others offer larger spaced areas to color in.
