Cats in Paris Coloring Book Review illustrated by Won-Sun Jang
This beautiful book has been enticing me to pre-order it for months with pictures of the delightful dust jacket on every online bookshop I visit. The beautiful cover is printed with mint green and gold foil highlights. There are some books on the shelf that the cat is lazing on, that you could colour if you wished. Cats in Paris is square and measures approximately 25cm x 25cm. The dust jacket can be removed and you can cover the images on the inside cover. Unfortunately, I’m disappointed with the inner cover of my book. First of all, the design does not make adequate use of the space with pictures of buildings to color at the bottom of the cover. Then, there are the pictures, lots of buildings ….but not a cat in sight 🙁 Finally, I do not know whether all books have this or whether it is a design “feature” but my book has a number of black smudges all over it. I believe it is a printing error and I don’t like it 🙁
The cover of the book is card and pale blue. There is a small illustration on it that you could color in if you wished. There is a note from the artist about the love of cats and the drawings of them slinking through the streets of Paris. Quite frankly, there is very little about this book that screams “Paris” at you. The cats could be wandering the streets of Sydney as there is very little Parisian flair in the book. The title of the book, for this reason, is disappointing. However, the illustrations are lovely.
The illustrations are printed on good quality smooth white paper. The illustrations are printed on both sides of the paper. Whilst there is a disappointing lack of pictures of Paris (although there are a few references) there are some lovely pictures of cats. Most of the cats appear to be fluffy, Persian style, but there are a few other breeds shown throughout the book. You will find gorgeous cats in the garden, playing with balls of wool and sitting in their favorite chairs.
The line work is strong, black and should be easy for people with visual impairments to see. There are also a number of images with large spaces that would suit those that dislike intricate areas to color in. At the end of the book, there are some different breeds of cats in postage stamp format. This would have been an opportunity to have a French stamp but that is not the case.
