Carousel Dreams Coloring Book Review by YamPuff
YamPuff is a well known name amongst card makers and scrapbookers for her cute and whimsical illustrations. In this coloring book for adults, YamPuff has created illustrations based on a carousel. Think cute ponies, carousel rides and lots of whimsy!
Cover & Layout
The cover is a soft matte cover which has been printed in a beautiful selection of pastels. The book measures 28cm x 21.5 cm (approximately 11 in x 8.5 in). Both of the images from the front and back cover, have been included in the book for you to color.
The title page for the book features a lovely “frame” of a pony, girl and stars. This is a great spot to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper. On the reverse of this page you will find details of how you can connect with the artist and share your colored images.
The illustrations have all been printed on white, trade stock paper, with one image per page.
Illustrations
In total there are 24 illustrations to color in the book plus the title page. All of the illustrations reflect the carousel theme and flow well in the book. Throughout the book you will find cute ponies, a lion and even some unicorns all with beautiful manes of hair. Big eyed girls in a carousel theme compliment the carousel animals and there is even a mandala that has the look of a topographical shot of a carousel.
The illustrations have all been well centered on the page. There are no images that abut the spine making it easy for colorists to color all parts of the image. The book lays down flat easily for coloring.
About half of the illustrations have a number of additional elements in the background and foreground of the main image.
The lines are crisp and black and very easy to see. The line weight varies throughout the book with a few fine lines for small details, a few heavy weight lines for definition, with the bulk of the lines being a medium weight. The majority of the line art should be easy for most colorists to work with even if they have visual impairment.
The artist has also provided different levels of complexity in the illustrations provided. There are a number of images, that although they are detailed, have large spaces making it easy to color for those that do not like or have issues coloring fiddly bits.
One of the things that I love about this book is the work on the reverse of the image. Usually the back part of an image, in a single sided coloring book, is left blank. YamPuff has added a cute logo (that you can color in) together with a short commentary on each page. The commentary sets out the creation process for the book. You really feel involved in the book, reading how designs were formulated, used and the things that inspired YamPuff. I love this touch and hope that we see it in other coloring books for adults.
