Anime Coloring Book Review
Anime is an abreviation of animation and refers to the Japanese hand drawn or computer generated illustrations. These drawings are usually “characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes” according to Wikipedia 🙂
Cover & Layout
Anime Doodle Girls – Volume 1 has a soft cover with a partially colored girl on the front.   The cover art has been included in the book to color. The sizing of the art work on the cover is similar to the size of the drawings within. On the back cover there are 8 thumbnails of drawings from the book.   The book measures 28cm x 21.5cm (11 in x 8.5 in) which is usual coloring book size for independent artists.
The artist has included some tips on using the book at the start.  This is followed by a cute nameplate page which features the cartoon mascot of the artist to color.
Inside the 29 hand drawn illustrations of Anime Doodle Girls are printed on white, trade stock paper with one image per page.
Illustrations
The illustrations are very cute and quirky.   There are lovely girls with elaborate hair and patterned dresses to color.  The variety of different hairstyles and headgear is amazing.   The artist has drawn all her doodle girls with big eyes and enviable lashes.    She has added a glimmer or highlight points to each eye in the collection.
Most of the illustrations have the Anime Doodle Girl as the main focus of the art but there are a couple of drawings with some background elements in them as well.
The illustrations are not the full size of the book page but rather the size of the image on the cover.  The drawings measure approximately 8.5 in x 6.5 in.
At the foot of each page there is space to add your name as Colorist, together with the Artist’s details.     I really like this feature and wish more artists would do this.  This makes it so much easier to track the relevant details of a #responsiblecolorist when uploading your completed pieces to social media  The only other thing I would like to see is a space for the date to be added so you can track your own coloring journey. You can, of course, hand write this in yourself in the space provided.
The illustrations are well centered on the page and are all framed in a nice medium weight border.    All of the drawings have a margin of white space around them ensuring that no image runs into the spine of the book.
The line work is black and crisp and very easy to see.    The line weight is mainly medium to heavy throughout with a few fine lines for accents.  Visually these images are extremely easy to see for those with minor visual impairment.
The drawings are very detailed yet they offer enough large spaces within each drawing to make it easy for new colorists and those that do not like fiddly coloring to enjoy.
Bonus
At the end of the book, the artist has included two illustrations from future books being “Tangle in Love” and my fave, “Animal Doodle” which features the cutest ducks ever.
