Animals Night & Day Coloring Book
Animals Night and Day has been designed to challenge the colorist to think differently when coloring. Gone are the traditional black outlines and white backgrounds. This book has been designed with there different color palettes to show animals in a “day” look with a gold, navy or black outline against a white background or a “night” look with the same outline colors but with a solid background of navy blue or black.
Cover & Layout
Animals Night and Day is a square book with a lovely card cover. The cover picture accurately describes the content of the book by featuring an image on a dark “night” background with “night” text below and the “day” on a lighter background to signify daylight. The illustration of the elephant has been pre printed in color with some silver foil highlights in the elephant and the title wording. On the back cover of the book there are some examples of pre colored pictures that have used a vibrant, colorful (as opposed to natural) color palette.
The title page features an image of the elephant on the front cover with the trunk being tilted to the left.
The copyright page follows that has a nice illustration of a bird on it. The copyright page discloses that the illustrations used in the book are from Shutterstock, a large stock photography library, and images supplied from Patricia Moffett. When images are used from stock photography sites too often colorists may experience a feeling of “sameness”. They may have seen the image before but with say a different pattern, background or foreground added.
Another title page follows with the image of the elephant, trunk to the left. These ancillary pages would be a great spot to test your mediums on without damaging the illustrations in the book proper.
Illustrations
The illustrations contained in the book are printed on both sides of the paper. The paper is perforated for easy removal. It is disappointing that the book has been published in this manner, as a choice will need to be made on which image to select if you are hoping to gift or frame the completed drawings.
The paper is white, smooth and a a medium quality.
The illustrations have been nicely centered and do not abut the spine for ease of coloring.
The drawings consist of a range of animals, generally just the head shot, but there are some full bodied animals eg frog and birds. Each animal is presented in a “night” view and a “day” view on the reverse. There are 90 illustrations being a duplicate of 45 images.
The animal portraits have been outlined in a variety of inks including, navy, gold and black. Each portrait is filled with a pattern that flows with the shape of the animal. Some illustrations also include a patterned background or pre-printed colored background.
The line weight varies between, fine, medium and heavy weight lines. The darker inks – navy blue and black are visually easy to see but some people may have difficulty with the gold outlines.
There are many images in the book that have larger spaces for colorists that do not like small detailed work.
The use of different colored inks and pre printed colored backgrounds can be disconcerting to colorists and may limit the color palette selected. Alternatively it can also be a challenge that provides a rewarding experience and an unexpected but happy result.
