Rover’s Magical Kingdom Coloring Book Review

This is the first book that I have reviewed that is published by Global Doodle Gems. Global Doodle Gems publish a large number of coloring books using different artists and illustrators in their books. This book is illustrated by Rover Hsiao and his style is very cute and whimsical. In this book we are taken for a journey in his Magical Kingdom. The style of drawing being cute and whimsical makes it suitable for colorists of all ages and skill levels.

Cover & Layout

Rovers Magical Kingdom has a glossy soft cover with a pre colored illustration on it. The style is similar and consistent with the drawings in the book. The cover image has been reprinted as the title page of the book. A decorative nameplate/contact page follows before the coloring book proper commences.

The back cover features a gorgeous colored image from the book which really showcases how these naive designs can pop when colored.

The illustrations have all been printed on white, trade stock paper. You will need to pop some pieces of paper behind the page you are coloring to avoid bleed through if you are using wet mediums.

Illustrations

There are 60 illustrations in the book printed on one side of the paper.

I adore whimsical images so it is no surprise that I love the cuteness of the images in this book. In Rover’s Magical Kingdom there are an abundance of cute little girls, whimsical maidens and delicate florals.

The drawings are naive and simplistic, although with a lot of detail. this style of art, often has large spaces to color making it easy for colorists of all ages to enjoy. Another advantage of simplified line art is that it gives the skilled colorist more space to use their techniques to allow the image to shine.

There are a number of illustrations that have small, finer details on them which may prove too fiddly for some colorists.

All of the images have been well centered on the page without abutting to the spine of the book. The illustrations also provide variety as they are orientated in both portrait and landscape style.

The whimsical drawings are all outlined in black ink which ranges in line weight from fine to medium.

Some variety has been provided in the book with the inclusion of three mandalas. In addition there are 4 heart style pictures which may make a nice mobile, gift tag or frame for a project.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
