Petite Picture Snow White Princess Coloring Book  Review

This is the third coloring book that Sato Asuka has created in a series.    For a while, I’ve looked at the others in the series, and even put them in my cart only to always “save for later”.  I just could not commit 🙂 When I seen the cover of the Petite Picture Snow White Princess book it immediately grabbed me.    That bright red apple, instantly reminded me of Snow White and I really liked all the cute little doodles on it and felt that coloring them would be within my limited skill set.

Google translate indicated what the English title was.    It seems quite a mouthful and a confusing title to me.       When the book arrived, I was further confused.     Initially, on leafing through it, I thought this is not “Snow White”.   At first, I put it down to a language barrier.     Then I looked again through the book and realised …it was Snow White,  just not in any way that I’ve seen before.      You can see it in the images, a very different Snow White and very different seven “dwarves”.       That’s what I love about art.    There are so many different interpretations and ways to look at things.  So many different styles of illustration and art that challenge preconceptions.

Cover & Layout

A glossy dust jacket cover with pre printing protects the coloring book proper.   The red on the apple in real life, is neon like – it is so bright.  It is surrounded by itty bitty doodles that feature stars, animals and itty bitty characters.   The type of images and the scale of the size is indicative of what you will find in the book.

On the back cover the same mass of itty bitty doodle characters are featured, partially colored with two gorgeous outlined white bunnies, creating a beautiful contrast in the packed chaos.

The petite book measures 15cm x 21.2cm  (5.8in x 8.6in)  and is a lovely size for  your handbag or travelling.

The cover art has been reproduced on the matte laminate inner card cover which you could color if you wished.   You  may need gel pens though to penetrate the cover.

Ancillary Pages

A sweet image of Snow White serves as the title page for the book.   There are 8 pages of visual index which have been printed on colored paper.

There are 10 pages of colored inspirational images at the end of the book.  Copyright information is on the last page.

One of the great things about the colored inspirational images is that you can see in some pictures that each individual doodle has not been colored, instead a color wash has been created on those elements.   As the line art still shows through it’s a great way of “coloring” without the stress of trying to color each fiddly bit.

Layout

All of the line art has been printed on both sides of the white, medium quality paper.     The bulk of the images in the book are double page spreads and the line art does run to the spine of the book.   At the moment, the book is not laying down easily.  I may be forced to get Mr Muscles to give it a push for me.

There are two double page spreads that have been orientated portrait style so that you have a vertical image.

Petite Picture Snow White Princess Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The lines are black and crisp and quite easy to see in this petite coloring book.   Most of the lines are a medium width.

Although the lines are easy to see, the images are packed with very small details, coupled with the small size of the book, this can make it difficult to discern individual elements.

The art work is super cute and quirky and a novel take on Snow White.     Images of Snow White, the “dwarves” and wicked stepmother are featured in the book.

You will also find cute flowers,  cartoon like animals and itty bitty doodles.    This is a book to have fun with and not take life too seriously.

I found when I was coloring it, that after a little bit I didn’t worry that I had gone out of the lines (it was bound to happen).  In some pictures where the details were more than what I wanted to tackle, I just colored all in one color over them.      Not only did that save my sanity, but it was also very liberating not to have to worry about choosing the colors, or placing them in the right place.

This book is not suitable for colorists with a visual impairment as the small detailed images may drive you to distraction (unless you are happy to color wash over them).

Bonus

At the end of the book there are two pages with 4 small images on them that you could use for note cards or gift tags.     The first page does have a colored inspirational image on the reverse though so you may not wish to cut that up.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
