An Enchanting Coloring Book – The Wizard of Oz with Removable Poster

There are so many Wizard of Oz coloring books on the market to choose from.   When I seen that Fabiana Attansio was illustrating another beautiful fairy tale based coloring book, I knew that I had to have it.   I love the Wizard of Oz!   I love the story, the movie and all my Wizard of Oz Coloring Books.    The added bonus is that I am already familiar with Fabiana’s illustrations through her lovely coloring books Peter Pan and my favorite fairy tale which is Alice in Wonderland.

Cover & Layout

The cover is very appealing. White fold out card has been decorated with a collage of illustrations from the book.  There is some pre printing in blues, reds, gold (not foil) and greens. You will see references to the witch, Dorothy and Toto and of course flying monkeys.    The cover in itself tells the story very quickly in illustrative form.   The title has been printed in shades of green.  The spine complements the color of the title in green.

One of the things that I love about this series of books is that there is always consistency in the cover and layout.   I love how each book has its own colored spine, making it super easy to find the one are looking for on the shelf.

The back cover also contains a collage of  pre printed images and a text blurb in green about the book.  The collage continues around the book to the french flaps on the inside.   On the back of the book these flaps protect the folded and glued poster that is also included in the book.

Both the front and back cover and french flaps can be colored in.   On the inner cover there is pre printing of black and white line art.    The images are shoes, feathers, flowers, gems and the like.    This cover is white glossy so you may need to use alcohol markers if you wished to color it in.

The book size is 8.4 in x 10.1 in and all the books in the “An Enchanting Coloring Book” series are the same size and format.

Ancillary Pages

A plain title page commences the book (always a good spot to test those mediums).     This is followed by a double page spread title page featuring hot air balloons and copyright information on the reverse.

A seven page abridged story of the Wizard of Oz follows.   This has been lightly decorated with images for you to color in including the tin man, shoes,  Toto and gems.  This seems like a very good s story length to read to a child.  The coloring book proper then commences.

The only thing that could improve these books, in my opinion, is the addition of a beautiful nameplate page.

Layout

All of the illustrations are printed on both sides of the medium quality white paper.   The paper has a slight texture to it, making it ideal to layer pencils on.  The illustrations are all orientated portrait style.  There are 46 pages  that comprise double page scenes in the book with the balance being images contained on one page.      All of the double page spreads have line art that runs to the spine of the book.   However, the book does lay down flat quite easily with some gentle pressure, making it easier to color in those tricky spots.

Illustrations

The illustrations in this coloring book tell the story of the Wizard of Oz beautifully.  We move from Kansas to meeting all our favorite characters beautifully drawn.   One of the things that I really like about Fabiana’s style is that she is able to capture the action movement of the character on a coloring page. We feel that we are running with Toto or Dorothy in some of her illustrations.

The illustrations have been inked in a black fine to medium weight line.     There is a lot of open space within the illustrations making the book ideal to color for all ages and skill levels.    Fabiana uses a finer line and sometimes solid black in her images, to bring out the dimension and texture in them.

Most of the illustrations fill the whole of the page with very little room for background effects if you wanted to add those.    There are a handful of images that would be enhanced with a background color as they are positioned with a lot of white space around them.

Fabiana’s drawings, because they reflect a fairy tale, generally have a lot of elements to them.  You feel you are being transported to the story itself or a scene in a movie with the background and foreground additions.

There are a few images that I would describe as pattern based within the book.    Possibly this is used to give variety to the colorist, or for the times when you don’t have time or inclination to tackle a whole page.    The beauty of this is that you can do a little at a time when the mood hits you.

Most of the images, although detailed and have a lot of elements, are not tightly packed.  This means that there are not a lot of tiny details in the book to color, making it ideal for those with visual impairment or health challenges that make small space coloring difficult.

There is one illustration that has a pre printed black background on it.

Bonus

One of the lovely things about the “Enchanting Coloring Book” series is that each book comes with a beautiful fold out poster.    The poster is printed on white, medium weight paper and measures in at 95cm x 67 cm.    This would be ideal for coloring and framing in a child’s nursery or room or coloring as  a family project!    The poster features all of our favorite characters including a rainbow and the yellow brick road.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
