Coloring Book  Review

I have long been a fan of Jennifer Zimmermann’s gorgeous artwork   Her book [easyazon_link identifier=”0692811168″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”mygamingweb-20″]Glamourista[/easyazon_link] is filled with stunning women with a real art deco feel to them. It has long been a fave of mine.

Her coloring technique book,  Secrets of Coloring works as a great companion to her coloring books, teaching you tips on how to color metal and precious stones among other things.  You can see my review of  The Secrets of Coloring here.

Many coloring book illustrators do not like coloring their work.  Not Jennifer,  she is a real wizz with coloring her artwork and uses mediums like pan pastels to amazing effect (as well as her trusty pencils).   You can see her coloring tutorials on her YouTube channel and sometimes catch her live on Facebook.

Her latest coloring book, Bella Futura features a mix of “Beautiful Divas and Beautiful Beasts”.    The women are depicted as strong and independent, true warriors of love and beautifully decorated.   The beasts are likewise adorned with decorations and realistically drawn.

Cover & Layout

Bella Futura is available in two formats.   You can purchase the coloring book as a glossy soft cover with white trade stock paper.

Colorists that purchase the physical book will also receive a code where they can download some bonus digital pages as well (not the whole book).

For colorists that prefer to print on their own paper or save on shipping, you can also purchase a digital/pdf download of the coloring book.

The coloring book is approximately A4 sized measuring 8,5in x 11 in.

Ancillary Pages

You will find copyright information, contacts page, a note from the artist, a permission slip to print pdf and a nameplate page inside.  Any of these pages will be useful to test out your mediums if you are coloring from the physical book. You can also use the handy color organizer at the back of the book.

If you choose to purchase the pdf/digital download of the book you can use your favorite paper to test your mediums.

Layout

There is one double-page spread within the coloring book featuring the gorgeous warrior woman and wolf on the right.     Even though it is a double page scene, Jennifer has formatted the book so that there is no image on the reverse of the scene.

If you purchase the digital download of the book you will also receive a file to print this out as a full-page image.    I had this image printed by my local copy store on A3 paper as shown in the video.

The balance of the images has been printed on single-sided paper.

All of the illustrations are orientated portrait style throughout the book.

The illustrations are duplicated with a twist in this coloring book.   One set of illustrations has a white background and these images . have then been duplicated with either a full black or partial black background.    The black backgrounds have completely stolen my heart.  I could imagine many of these pictures framed to give as gifts.

Art Work

Jennifer’s artwork has a real hand drawn and realistic feel to it.  Dull black lines with a medium weight have been used to outline the pages.  Jennifer uses enough line art to detail areas that need to be detailed, like hair segmentation and fur texture, without overwhelming the colorist.

The illustrations in this coloring book feature gorgeous animals and beautiful strong women. Both subjects have been depicted in context with the theme of the book.   All of the illustrations have some form of adornment or bling to add visual interest, flow with the theme of the book and give colorists opportunity to try out techniques.

Colorists that wish to practice skin and hair will find an array of different hairstyles to practice on.  Long hair, wavy hair, straight hair has all been covered in the illustrations.

The women featured have different facial profiles including side, full face and full body.  Some of these women also feature animals as their tattoos.

A variety of animals have also been included from lanky giraffes, beautiful birds, snakes, butterflies and an amazing wolf.

If you want to practice adding bling there is no shortage of sparkly things to color.  Crowns, headdresses, gemstones, pearls, beads, and crystals all feature throughout the book.

Colorists that have a minor visual impairment will appreciate that the bulk of the women have large areas of open space and that most illustrations are not overly burdened with fiddly detail.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
