Pastry Jackie! Coloring Book  Review

When I first seen this coloring book online,  I checked the artist twice.   Surely,  Japanese coloring book artist Tomoko Tashiro could not be right for this book.   I doubted myself and I doubted the shop.   They must have made a mistake.   Tomoko Tashiro draws intricate and detailed Fairy Tales,  Princesses and Fairies and Fantasy Colouring not cuddly critters and whimsical art.   I had already resigned myself to the fact that Tomoko’s illustrations were, for me, for looking not coloring.     Then along came Pastry Jackie!    How quickly can you say love at first sight!

Cover & Layout

The dust jacket on Pastry Jackie!  features partially colored line art.   The colors hae the appearance of pencil markings and immediately makes me feel I could achieve the same look with my beginner skills. A red spine is a nice contrast to the white text in Japanese.

On the back of the dust jacket a wall paper pattern is the background for a badge that reads The Bears’ School Movie – Patisseier Jackie and the Sunshine Sweets (now that sounds too cute!).   The wall paper background is very reminiscent of  Tomoko’s previous fairy tale coloring books.     This is something that we see in this book,  some shades of Tomoko’s work which identify her as the artist but in a completely different way.    I had no idea that Tomoko’s talent was so versatile until I seen this coloring book.

The fold out flaps on the dust jacket feature line art.   At the front and back there are two gorgeous sundaes with little bears adorning them against a lemon background.   These little critters have so much personality, I could swear the bear at the back is sulking.

The coloring book proper has a hot pink cover with white outline art for you to color.

Ancillary Pages

A cute little bear among the flowers is the title page for this book.  Over leaf you will find a message in Japanese from the artist and a story.  Both of these text based pages are decorated with other cute elements to color in.

This is followed by two pages depicting the characters in the story.

At the end of the book there is an 11 page visual thumbnail index.    The final page features a cute little house and publishers information over page.     Any of these pages would be great to test out your mediums.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on both sides of the white, medium to heavy quality paper.

There are 40 pages that comprise double page scenes.   Most of the line art has been positioned away from the spine to make coloring easier.

Pastry Jackie! Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The illustrations in this coloring book are adorably cute.   There are sweet little bears and other animals that make up the characters of the story.     Tomoko has fashioned little outfits for them and incorporated them in scenes that are both imaginative and make you want to reach for the pencils.

What I am most impressed about with the characters of this coloring book is that they have so much personality.   If you look at the pages you will detect some sulky looks, grumpy and a few cheery little characters.   With just a few strokes, the artist has managed to give this line art a large personality.

Usually when I see Tomoko’s work I fear that it is way beyond my coloring skills.  Not so, with Pastry Jackie.    I couldn’t wait to film this book so I could grab my pencils and start to color like a kid.

There are hints of Tomoko’s usually finely detailed work in this book with lovely and delicate flowers but for the whole it is filled with whimsical drawings that are suitable for colorists of all ages and skill levels.

Colorists that have a minor visual impairment may also feel that the clear, black line art with large open spaced elements is easier to color than other works by this artist.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
