Wonderland Journey Coloring Book Review

Wonderland Journey Coloring Book is a lovely Japanese coloring book by Amily Shen. Amily has already produced several coloring books which all have an Alice in Wonderland-inspired theme.

Cover & Layout

The lovely matte dust jacket on Wonderland Journey has a light denim blue background with colorful rabbits and creatures all over it. You can see some Alice in Wonderland inspiration with the King of Spades on one side and the King of Clubs on the other.  The pocket watch used by the White Rabbit features in the corner. There is some line art for you to color in on the dust jacket featuring lollipops that look like planets and flowers.

The back of the dust jacket features line art ready for you to color. The White rabbit has been reunited with his pocket watch amidst a field of what looks like Chupa chop planets and scattered gems.

The fold-out flaps feature information about the artist at the front and ads for other books at the back.

The inside card cover of this Japanese coloring book features a glossy white background with crisp black line art on the front that recreates the dust jacket scene. The back cover also features line art same as the dust jacket BUT the color is grey rather than black.

The book measures 24.8 x 24.8 cm.

Ancillary Pages

A royal purple page featuring the Cheshire cat and the Mad Hatter balanced on top of him commences the book. The lines are outlined in royal purple as well and can be colored in. The reverse of this page features the white rabbit with white and purple line art for coloring and details about the book.

The front cover has been reproduced as the title page for the book and features the royal purple used as the title for the book.

A two-page introduction follows, in Japanese text. This features the white rabbit among flowers with a navy background. The line art is navy blue.

At the conclusion of the coloring book part of the book, you will find a Lesson. This section of the book has been printed in color and is absolutely gorgeous. It starts with two cats introducing us to the topic. It then follows with coloring techniques for use on doughnuts, cat faces, cupcakes, flowers, chocolate cream puffs, danishes, and rabbits.

Although the lessons are in Japanese you can still follow the steps and have an idea of what it is you are meant to do. It also includes useful arrows to show how you should do your strokes to achieve looks. There is a little color palette by each picture. Once you have completed some of these lessons there is a colored image that you have been supplied the line art for to practice on.

Another section follows called Lets Dance which features ballerina bunnies! Another pencil technique is shown for coloring fur. A beautiful colored inspirational image called “Afternoon Tea” has been provided with line art for the entrance to a house to color in. All of the lessons culminate in completing a number of individual elements and laying them on the floral background paper provided in the book. If you follow the steps you can use these pictures to create a shadow box, 3D type effect. These colored images are just truly stunning and beyond cute!

Layout

The book has been divided into Chapters commencing at 00 and concluding at 08. Each of the starting pages of the Chapter features beautiful colored artwork and the title of the Chapter in both Japanese and English.

The artwork is all presented on both sides of the medium-quality white paper. There are 19 pages of illustrations that have a pre-printed background excluding the Ancillary Pages. There are 34 pages of double-page scenes where the artwork runs to the spine. The balance being illustrations contained within the one page. The pages do fold down reasonably well, but it still may be tricky coloring some areas in the spine for some illustrations.

All of the images have been orientated in portrait style.

Wonderland Journey Coloring Book Images & Illustrations

Amily Shen draws with such a whimsical style that it is hard to resist. Her crisp, black line art makes it very easy to see and the abundance of cute animals and quirky scenes makes it a fun book.

There is a running Alice in Wonderland inspiration to this book where we see the White Rabbit travel throughout the pages. He has a leading role in this book and Alice merely a cameo. You will be swept across a number of fairy tales that the White Rabbit goes on his journey into including Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio and the Musicians of Bremen fairy tale

You will find beautifully illustrated interiors with so much attention to detail that you could color for hours just on one page. There are quirky King of cards scenes, the Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat make appearances as do other favorites from nursery rhymes like Humpty Dumpty. We meet Princess Rabbit and her sweet shop filled with so many sweet treats that you will be pleased to only color it rather than eat it. There are scenes in the air featuring planes and planets and atop ice cream cones.

Birds also feature heavily in the illustrations having a chapter devoted to Bird City and another devoted to a shawl sewn from Swan Wings. At the end of the day, the White Rabbit returns home to Alice where he is welcomed with open arms.

The line art is all beautifully crisp and well-drawn. Most of the illustrations have a lot of detail in them to color and tend to fill the bulk of the page. Colorists that like to add background effects will find a few pictures with white space that would look great colored in.

Colorists that have visual impairment may find some drawings have too much detail in the small areas. There are, however, many images that have larger areas of open to color

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
