Korean Ballet and Paper Doll Coloring Book  Review

Many readers will know that I am a huge paper doll fan.  I love paper dolls!  Although I didn’t really fancy dolls as a child, I did have paper doll books.    I used to love cutting out the dolls and dressing them up in different outfits and playing with them.    It seems slightly odd that as I have aged I have reverted to childhood – coloring and playing with paper dolls!

This book is slightly different from most coloring books being that it is part coloring book and part pre-colored paper doll book.    The paper dolls do not need to be colored, they are ready to cut out and start playing with immediately.

As a child each week I used to go to classical ballet classes and of course, all the theatre productions associated with it.    Now as an old(er) woman I still pirouette in the kitchen from time to time and use the counter as a barre.

Cover & Layout

The cover of this Korean ballet coloring book is white gloss card.    A colored ballerina features on the cover.    Silver foil highlights add a touch of luxury to this book.

On the back cover, there is a gorgeous colored image with the background colored and the ballerinas in line art.

The fold out flap features thumbnails from the book at the front and advertisements for other books at the back.

The coloring book measures 23cm x 23cm approximately.

Ancillary Pages

At the start of the book, you will find the title page with the ballerinas featured on the front cover to color.   This is the only page to test out your mediums, but there is line art on the reverse.

Layout

The book is divided into two parts.  The first part is double page printing featuring the line art to color.   This has been printed on medium weight, off white paper that has a faint texture to it.    The line art is a dull black and varies between a fine to medium line.

The second part of the book features colored paper dolls and accessories on glossy colored, medium to heavy paper.   The reverse of each page of dolls features a lovely colored decoration.

Art Work

The artwork in this ballet book is sweet and whimsical.    You will find cute images of ballerinas from the hopeful home ballerina twirling at home to the more traditional ballerina.

The artist has included background elements to color as well to really set the scene.

The ballerinas do tend to look a little same same in the images but I think that may be intentional to reproduce the look of a ballet production, where all members are dressed and perform alike.

This is a sweet and whimsical book and one that ballet fans will enjoy.

There is two double page spreads in the book which feature a repeat pattern.   I do not fancy as much as the other illustrations in the book.    Of course, they would certainly be great to practice on.

Colorists that want to practice coloring clothing will be pleased with the number of different outfits in the book and the line detail applied to the clothing.   This line detail makes it easier to color as you can follow the artist’s guide.

As well as the ballerinas of color there are cute animals, sweet treats, flowers and interior and exterior scenes.   There are a number of images with lights in them that make it easy to work out your light source for the picture as well.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
