Classic Coloring: Alice in Wonderland Coloring Book Review

Regular readers will know that I am Alice in Wonderland obsessed. I would be quite happy to live in Wonderland and have Mad Hatter Tea Parties every day. I would, of course, be Alice 🙂 It’s always a given that if I see an Alice in Wonderland Colouring Book that it will probably make its way to my shelf, to join the others. Of course, I couldn’t pass this one up because the illustration are based on the original art work of Sir John Tenniel and have the true “original” Alice feel to them that always makes me sentimental.

Cover & Layout

The cover features the White Rabbit against a cream background printed on a light card. Dashes of gold foiling in the title and accessories on the White Rabbit add a touch of charm. The book is bound in red binding tape with gold foil for the title and embellishments.

On the back of the book there are thumbnails of 4 coloured images from within the book surrounded by falling cards.

A thick piece of card is at the rear of the book to ensure that it is kept sturdy and for ease of colouring if you are colour within the book.

Classic Colouring Alice in Wonderland measures approximately 15.3cm x 20.5 cm ( 6in x 8in)

Ancillary Pages

A text based title page commences the book with copyright information on reverse. This is the only spot to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper and your colouring style.

Layout

The illustrations are described as “55 removable colouring plates”. Each plate or page can be easily removed from the glue binding and pad style colouring book. The pages are not perforated so you need to carefully lift the page from the binding if you wish to color on a desk or clipboard or to frame the image.

Thought has gone into the presentation of the book with each image sized to fit in a standard 6 x 8 inch picture frame.

All of the illustrations have been printed on white, medium to heavy, paper with a snippet from the Lewis Carroll story on the reverse.

Classic Coloring: Alice in Wonderland Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The art work is all based on the original art that Sir John Tenniel created. He was responsible for the original illustrations in 1865 in Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass in 1871.

His art work consists of heavy use of black for shading and detail which produces an effect when coloured of old world illustrations. As you would expect, this colouring book portrays all of the characters in the traditional sense.  It is interesting to see it again in this format and I have missed that cheeky Cheshire Cat.

Although the images do not contain as many elements as you may find in other colouring books,  there is still a large amount of detail and intricacy in each drawing, due to the sketchy and painterly style of art work.

Colorists that have minor visual impairment may find that the predominant use of black throughout each image rather than as an outline format may be distracting on the eye and difficult to color. This book, is one that color washes would be ideal for, as much of the detail has already been included by the artist.

If you have health challenges that make colouring tightly packed detailed pages difficult,  this book may present a problem for you.   The smaller sized book, means that the images are scaled down and may not suit due to the compact page size.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
