Botanicum Coloring Book  Review

Swedish artist,  Maria Trolle has created some of the most beautiful coloring books in my collection.    Her love of flowers and plants shines through in each luxurious book that she has produced.   Luckily for me,  I have all of Maria’s books in both the original Swedish edition and English or Dutch edition.

Her latest coloring book is Botanicum.    So far I think this coloring book may well be my favorite.  It manages to combine the whimsy and sweetness of  Vivi /Droomreis with the beautiful flowers and plants we first discovered in Blomster Mandala/ Twilight Garden and Nightfall.

Maria has stated on Facebook that she does not have a contract for an English edition of the book.   However, there is a  Dutch imprint of the book which may be an option for some colorists unable to purchase the Swedish edition.

Cover & Layout

Botanicum has a hardback cover.  Unlike most of Maria’s books, there is no gold foiling on the cover.    The brightly colored decal style cover art is very attractive.  To be honest, I do not miss the foiling.

Like all of Maria’s coloring books (except Vivi) there are matte black protective pages at either end of the book.    All of these touches, tend to make a luxurious coloring book.

Ancillary Pages

A decorated title page starts the book with a dedication over leaf. Both have a small picture for you to color in.   This is followed by a cute nameplate page.   Unusually, the nameplate page is in the form of a plant tag (which suits the theme of the book).

At the end of the book, there is a 4 page list of the plants including their Latin name and page in the book where they are pictured.   This is useful if you want to look up a reference picture to color realistically.

The last page of the book is a tester page.    There are three small images to color as well as ample blank space to test out your pencils.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on both sides of the off-white, medium quality paper.

There are 10 pages that have printed with a black background which is consistent with Maria’s style.

All of the illustrations are single page images with no double page spreads.  They have all been well positioned and centered on the page to avoid the spine area of the book for easier coloring.

Art Work

The artwork in this coloring book features beautiful flowers,  cute little animals and sweet little girls throughout the pages.   It has a touch of whimsy to it that is very appealing.

Maria has a way of drawing flowers that just makes you want to color them in.    There is enough detail added to the pictures that make them suitable for new colorists as well as colorists experienced with blending and shading.

Although I cannot see a mention of it,  Botanicum seems to have a seasonal theme.   There is a cute Easter bunny <3, Halloween pictures and even a Christmas scene with an adorable cat.

Since Twilight Garden, Maria has started to include sweet little girls in her illustrations and this book is no different.   There are a variety of little girls throughout the book that feature simple,  outlines.

The line art is a medium weight, the black line making it easy to see for colorists with a minor visual impairment.

Maria’s pictures vary in level of detail throughout the book which is useful for whatever mood you may find yourself in.

Usually, I like to keep my original Swedish editions intact and color only in the imprint version.  However, I think Botanicum is going to make me change my mind on that.   The cute illustrations in this coloring book are very hard to resist!

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
