Modern Art Paintings Coloring Book Review

I adore modern art and love Picasso! One of the best jobs I ever had was working at the National Art Gallery in London when I was traveling around Europe in my youth. Getting paid to look at paintings all day. Divine.

I was super excited to see a Modern Art Coloring Book that I could color in packed full of some of my favorite artists.

Cover & Layout

The soft glossy cover features Girl Before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso. The book measures 28cm x 21cm (approximately 11 in x 8.5 in). On the inside and back cover you will find the 30 original colored reprints of the original paintings to inspire you. The reprints are only small, thumbnail size so for true inspiration you may wish to view the originals online.

A title page follows with a small scaled version of The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. A table of contents follows listing the 30 illustrations that are contained in the book. The art is presented in alphabetical order by artist’s last name.

The Scream – Edvard Munch

The rendered images have all been printed on white, perforated paper with one image per page. On the reverse of the image the details of the picture and information about the artist has been stated.

The paper is good quality, in my opinion, less than a medium weight. As the paper is perforated I would remove it from the book to work with. If you did not wish to remove the paper then I would put a few pieces of paper underneath the image you are working on to avoid damage or transfer to the next page.

Illustrations

The illustrations have been outlined in a crisp, dull black line with a fine to medium line weight throughout. Some of the illustrations have less detail and larger spaces than others providing different levels of complexity for colorists of all skill levels.

Oedipus Rex – Max Ernst

The reprints have all been framed with a thin border and are nicely centered on the page, avoiding the margin areas.

Can you reproduce some of the greatest art to coloring book form?

It is a question that has me scratching my head. I adore the original art from the artists in this book. At first glance, I thought the answer was a resounding “no.”

La Guitariste – Georges Braque

As I studied the originals more, I started to see in my own mind, how they would look when colored with pencils, markers or inktense and seen that not only was it possible, but the results could be amazing. Some works, like those by Paul Klee, you can imagine colored in markers or pencils quite easily. Others, like the works of Salvador Dali, you can imagine being interpreted in either pencils, inktense or a mix of mediums.
