Colour Quest – Extreme Colouring Challenges To Complete

I have to say that Colour Quest is one of the more unusual books that I have reviewed in adult coloring.    Colour Quest is illustrated by Joanna Webster and contains 30 geometric designs.    The designs are printed on single sided white paper, that is perforated for easy removal.

The book is larger than most coloring books on the market.  It measures in at approximately 36.5 cm x 26.5 (10.5 in x 14.6 in).   Joanna has created a color by numbers coloring book at, what I call, an advanced level.

I love the color by numbers concept.     I can barely color co-ordinate my clothes of a morning so I appreciate the fact that the artist has already produced a color palette that will work.   The good thing for those that are skilled with color is that you do not have to use this palette.    I like the palette, because it means, that if I follow the instructions then I should achieve a result that I am happy with the look of.

The book is made up of 30 designs.   There is a nice mix of designs, geometric, buildings and animals and flowers.  In fact, something to please everyone.

On each design in the left margin you are presented with a color palette key for the drawing.  You simply choose colors that are close to the palette from your markers or pencils, match it up with the corresponding number and color away.  Of course, you are free to create your own color palette as well.

Now here lies the problem for me ….I can barely see the printed number in very faint grey and itty bitty font.    For me, this is a project that would require my glasses and magnifying lamp.   I find that the grey design and number print is far too faint for my old eyes (I used to have such good eyesight 🙁 )   Not only is the printing faint but the design honeycomb space for the majority of the book, is very small. Honeycombs that do not have a number printed on them are left blank to signify white in the completed picture.

Out of  the 30 designs there are only 4 that I could color without my magnifying lamp.   This is  not a book for those that may be severely visually impaired, have arthritis in your hands or other ailments that may make coloring itty bitty places difficult.

Please note that these photos were taken up close with the camera and then filtered to improve the readability.

There are a few designs that have larger spaces to color (approx 4/30)

There are thumbnails of the completed designs at the back of the book.  If you find the thumbnails too small you can also view larger images at the publishers website.    You will see that the images have a cross stitch / tapestry like finish to them when completed.

The video flip through is below but please note due to the faintness of the printing in this book there is very little to see 🙂

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

  • Barron’s Color Quest

I just purchased your book at Joanne Fabrics. I did not want to try to read the numbers and do the work as you directed, so I scanned it into PhotoShop, increased the contrast, then used the pallet to grab the colors and used the paint bucket tool to fill the hexagons. Then, later went back and paint brushed over the numbers with the same colors.

I think there would be a great market for this application for your company. Hope you grab it before someone else does, for I am going to try to sell it.

Please let me know if you do take on this market, for I would like to subscribe to it and of course stop pursuing the idea with others.

    • Hi, I am not the artist of this book I just review books. You could contact the publishers with your suggestions. However, most coloring books do not allow for scanning as described by you as it is in breach of the copyright terms set out in the book. Always check the book to see what is allowed by the artist/publisher/author as not all terms are the same. There are many applications that allow you to use a photo tool to color the pictures. You can see some of them here – http://coloringqueen.net/coloring-with-apps/ Happy coloring x
